Thailand Issues Warning as Mpox Cases Near 1,000

Bangkok emerges as main hotspot while health authorities expand vaccination for high‑risk groups

BANGKOK, THAILAND – Thailand’s government issued an official warning as mpox infections approached 1,000 cases nationwide, with the outbreak centered in major tourist areas.

Bangkok leads national mpox statistics

The capital Bangkok remained the country’s largest hotspot, with 458 cases recorded, according to government spokesperson Airin Phanrit. Tourist provinces followed with Chon Buri reporting 85 cases, Nonthaburi 50, Phuket 35 and Samut Prakan 32, underscoring the virus’s presence in urban and tourism centers. Around 97% of patients were men of working age, and most infections were linked to sexual contact with partners who were not well known.

Targeted vaccination for high‑risk groups

In response to continued spread, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) distributed at least 2,000 doses of mpox vaccine this month. Recipients included medical personnel in public and private facilities and people with high‑risk sexual behavior in Bangkok, Chon Buri, Chiang Mai and Phuket. Authorities were instructed to strengthen surveillance and screening in affected areas to break chains of transmission early.

Government issues prevention guidance

The deputy government spokeswoman provided specific behavioral advice, urging people to avoid close physical contact with anyone showing unusual rashes or blisters. She said this caution was particularly important in crowded tourist locations, as mpox was transmitted through close skin‑to‑skin contact and contaminated materials. Typical symptoms included fever, headaches, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes and the characteristic rash that developed into blisters.

Case numbers, deaths and first detection

Official DDC figures showed 933 reported mpox cases and 13 deaths by September 2025, with the current tally described as “almost 1,000” cases. The first case in Thailand was detected in 2022 in Phuket in a foreign tourist, after which the virus spread within the country. The illness was usually mild but could pose serious risks for vulnerable groups such as immunocompromised people, pregnant women and young children.

Calls for responsibility and continued vigilance

The government appealed to personal responsibility, urging anyone with suspicious symptoms to seek medical care immediately and avoid close contact with others. The DDC stressed that information was the best protection and recommended vaccination primarily for members of high‑risk groups and medical staff. Officials said the situation would be closely monitored, noting that high case numbers in tourist destinations also posed an economic challenge for Thailand.

Questions over long‑term preparedness

The debate over mpox extended beyond immediate case numbers, touching on Thailand’s readiness for enduring viral threats.

“Almost 1,000 registered cases, fatalities, vaccination programs, constant monitoring – mpox has long ceased to be a marginal issue.”

said Bangkok Post, source report.

“How well is Thailand really prepared for long‑term viral threats? Are appeals and vaccination campaigns enough when infections spread mainly in party and tourism centers? And why does it often take high numbers before risks are taken seriously?”

said Bangkok Post, source report.
