PATTAYA, THAILAND – Residents and long-stay foreigners in the coastal city reported a sharp rise in noisy modified motorbikes and illegal night races following the holiday period.
Growing frustration over late-night motorbike noise
Locals said loud, modified motorbikes repeatedly raced at high speed through central streets in Pattaya, especially late at night and in the early morning hours. The noise from illegal exhaust systems was described as deafening and disrupted the sleep of entire neighborhoods.
Complaints focused on groups of tourists and Thai teenagers riding high-powered rental bikes. According to residents, unauthorized changes to exhaust systems created extreme noise levels far beyond normal traffic sounds.
Calls for tougher checks and penalties
Many residents urged the authorities to act much more strictly. They called for regular police checks and checkpoints, fines for illegal exhaust modifications, and consistent liability for rental operators who hand over bikes to unlicensed or clearly reckless riders.
Residents stressed that one-off campaigns were not enough to solve the problem.
“It requires consistent and permanent enforcement to restore peace in the city.”
said local complainants, according to recent submissions.
Police actions seen as insufficient
Police in Pattaya had already carried out several operations against illegal races and noise violations, seizing motorbikes and announcing further measures. Many affected residents, however, felt the checks were too sporadic.
They reported that the situation had noticeably worsened around the holiday season. The English-language local newspaper The Pattaya News said it had received numerous complaints in recent weeks about rising noise levels and night-time races.
Hotspots across several neighborhoods
Residents repeatedly named specific streets and areas where they believed action was particularly urgent. These included the Pratumnak Soi 5 area, Jomtien Second Road and Soi Yensabai.
People living in these neighborhoods reported persistent motorbike noise and disturbed nights. They expected the relevant authorities to monitor these hotspots closely and pursue violations consistently.
Tourist destination under pressure
Pattaya has long been one of Thailand’s most visited coastal cities and relies heavily on international tourism. Ongoing noise from illegal races and tampered exhaust systems now appeared to clash with its image as an attractive and safe holiday destination.
Without a lasting solution, many complaints warned, residents’ quality of life and the peace of residential areas would continue to deteriorate. Those affected believed the issue would not resolve itself without sustained intervention by the authorities.
