PATTAYA, THAILAND – A fast-moving grassfire on Thursday afternoon blanketed much of Pattaya in thick smoke and visibly unsettled residents and tourists.
Fire near Nong Prue municipal office
The blaze broke out around 1:30 p.m. near the municipal office at Khao Talo, Moo 11, in the Nong Prue subdistrict. Several units from the Nong Prue municipal fire service and the Pattaya city fire brigade responded with multiple fire engines to tackle the flames.
Driven by strong winds, the fire spread quickly across open land. More than 10 rai of grassland, about four acres, were burned as dense, dark smoke drifted over large parts of the urban area.
City covered in smoke, people seek open spaces
Witnesses reported that the heavy smoke settled over “the entire Pattaya region.” Many people experienced breathing difficulties, and numerous residents and visitors moved into open areas to escape the fumes.
Emergency crews initially struggled with the rapidly advancing fire. After about an hour, firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control.
Homes narrowly spared, no injuries reported
Particularly sensitive was the fire’s proximity to nearby residential zones. According to local authorities, the flames did not reach any houses, and no injuries were reported.
Officials also stated that there were no recorded cases of smoke poisoning. Residential areas were ultimately spared, despite the closeness of the fire line.
Local official raises suspicion of arson
The incident gained a new dimension with indications of possible arson. Jom Songkhramrod, a 58‑year‑old community caretaker, said there had already been a smaller fire in the same area around midday.
She reported that the fire brigade had been alerted at that time and appeared to have fully extinguished the first blaze.
“Later in the early afternoon, residents informed me about a second fire that had already spread widely,”
said Songkhramrod, community caretaker.
According to her account, the two suspected points of origin were only about 100 meters apart, and the incidents were separated by less than an hour. Based on this pattern, she voiced a strong suspicion of deliberate ignition.

Throughout the afternoon, numerous videos and photos circulated on social networks showing the towering smoke cloud over Pattaya. Many users described the situation as alarming, and some reported short-term breathing problems, though no serious health damage was mentioned.
Responsible agencies announced that they would investigate the cause of the fire. The focus of the inquiry was the suspicion that the blaze may have been started intentionally.
Public concerns over risks and accountability
Commentary around the incident highlighted how quickly a few minutes of smoke affected an entire city and raised questions about what might have happened if the fire had reached homes or trapped vulnerable people.
The discussion centered on whether this was a dangerous coincidence or the result of negligence or intent, and on calls for tougher penalties for arson and closer monitoring of high‑risk zones in and around Pattaya.
