LAMPANG, THAILAND – A pickup truck crashed into a kindergarten classroom in Lampang province, slightly injuring a child and triggering a police investigation into safety at the school.
Pickup ploughs into classroom at midday
The collision occurred on 7 January 2026 at around 12:15 p.m. at a school in Muang district, Lampang province, according to Khelang Nakhon Police Station. Officers were alerted after a vehicle reportedly drove into a school building. When police and responders from Amarin Rescue and Sawang Nakhon Lampang arrived, they found a pickup embedded halfway in a classroom wall.
Before hitting the building, the vehicle had struck a bicycle and a motorcycle parked next to the school, then crashed into a kindergarten-2 classroom. Several teachers and children were inside during the lunch break, resting or taking part in activities, and tables and chairs were scattered across the room by the impact.
Teacher’s quick reaction limits injuries
Witnesses said a teacher noticed the approaching pickup and told the children to lie down immediately. Moments later, the vehicle broke through the wall and debris and masonry fell into the room. One child suffered a minor head injury with swelling and was treated on site by rescue workers, while no further injuries to other children were initially reported.
According to the information available so far, more serious injuries appeared to have been prevented by the teacher’s swift action. Authorities did not report any fatalities, and emergency personnel remained at the scene to assess the condition of the pupils and staff.
Driver under treatment for mental health condition
The 50-year-old driver stayed at the scene and gave an initial statement to police, and was described as confused. A passenger travelling with him sustained a nose injury and told investigators that the driver had invited him to lunch and they had been on their way back when the crash occurred.
The passenger explained that the road at the accident site forms a T-junction, with the school located at its end. For reasons that remain unclear, the driver allegedly accelerated suddenly and headed straight onto the school grounds. Police said the man was currently being treated for a mental illness and was taking regular medication, and officers continued to question him to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Authorities assess damage and safety measures
According to the report by KhaoSod, officials were documenting the damage to the school building. At the same time, they were reviewing safety measures at the junction and in the area around the school. Particular attention was being paid to traffic management at the three-way intersection and to possible structural protective measures around the school grounds.
Authorities were also assessing the level of risk faced by students in the vicinity of the school. Police stated that their investigation into the sequence of events and background to the crash was ongoing.
Debate over structural protection at schools
The incident renewed questions over how quickly a classroom can become a danger zone.
