PATTAYA, THAILAND – A 35-year-old British tourist was taken into custody in Pattaya after allegedly assaulting a motorcycle driver during a late-night dispute over a ride-hailing payment.
Dispute Outside Walking Street
According to police, the incident occurred at about 3.36 a.m. in front of the well-known Walking Street in South Pattaya. Rescue workers from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation found 26-year-old rider Phummin Prommanot with a laceration, treated him at the scene and then took him to a local hospital.
Argument Over Credit Card Ride
Phummin, a motorcycle driver for the Bolt app, told officers that the British tourist had booked a ride through the platform but insisted on paying by credit card. The driver said he refused the request because, by his own account, he could not accept that payment method and apologized several times, but the tourist allegedly became angry, struck him and then tried to flee.
Bystanders Detain Shirtless Suspect
Witnesses reported the man was shirtless and appeared to be returning from a night out. Nearby passers-by intervened and held the suspect until emergency responders and police arrived at the scene.
Arrest and Ongoing Investigation
Police officers and municipal Special Affairs Officers arrested the man on the spot, identifying him as Sweeney, a 35-year-old Briton from Nottingham. Both the tourist and the injured rider were brought to Pattaya City Police Station to give formal statements, and the British national remained in police custody.
Investigators were reviewing CCTV footage from around Walking Street to reconstruct the exact sequence of events and ensure what they described as a fair investigation.
Potential Assault Charge Under Local Law
Police stated they were preparing an assault charge under local law. The Briton had not issued any public statement about his version of events.
Officers said they would thoroughly examine both witness testimonies and video recordings. Their stated aim was to clarify responsibility for the incident and handle the case in line with the applicable regulations.
