BANGKOK, THAILAND – Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul used his New Year address to urge Thais to embrace unity, safety and spiritual strength as the country entered the year 2569 (2026).
Reflections on a difficult year
The premier opened his nationally broadcast message with a sober look back at the past year, acknowledging the challenges many people had faced. He spoke of obstacles, exhaustion and suffering that had weighed on families across the country. Yet he quickly shifted focus to what he described as the unbroken spirit of the Thai people.
He praised the resilience and hope he saw in society.
“The heart of the Thai people is patient, resilient and still filled with hope,”
said Anutin, adding that these qualities were a vital strength that repeatedly brought Thai society together.
Call for safe travel and responsible celebrations
A central part of the speech was a serious appeal for safety over the New Year holidays, which he called a precious time for families. He asked all citizens to travel and celebrate without negligence, to respect the law and to put safety first. The message was directed in particular at the millions of travelers on what is often the most dangerous period on Thailand’s roads.
Tribute to officers and border soldiers
Anutin devoted a special section of his remarks to those working through the holidays. He thanked all officials and emergency personnel who ensured smooth travel and public security. A separate tribute went to the soldiers stationed along Thailand’s borders.
“I stand in solidarity with our soldiers, who make sacrifices and remain stationed along the border,”
said the visibly moved prime minister, extending a special greeting and thanks to these troops on duty.
Spiritual blessings for the nation
Concluding his address, Anutin offered a deeply spiritual wish for the new year. He invoked the blessing of the Triple Gem – the Buddhist refuges – and of all sacred beings. He also asked for the royal blessing of Their Majesties the King and Queen, saying this should bring happiness and prosperity to the people.
The prime minister said the blessing was intended to grant soldiers protection from all danger and to give the nation the strength to overcome any obstacles. He framed the message as a source of encouragement at the threshold of a new year.
Appeal to national pride amid uncertainty
Beyond marking the turn of the year, the speech was presented as a strategic appeal to national pride and shared responsibility. In a period of global and regional tensions, Anutin stressed the inner strength of Thailand and sought to rally the public behind the government and the soldiers who protect the country.
