CHANTHABURI, THAILAND – Thai naval forces detained six Chinese nationals near the Cambodian border in an operation targeting suspected people-smuggling networks.
Detention near Pong Nam Ron border section
Units from the Chanthaburi-Trat Border Protection Command (CTBDC) detained the group on Tuesday in a border area of Pong Nam Ron district. According to the Navy, the six Chinese nationals had been attempting to leave Thailand illegally in the direction of Cambodia and were believed to be part of an organized smuggling operation.
“This underlines the continued presence of cross-border smuggling networks.”
said Rear Admiral Parach Rattanachaiyapan, Navy spokesperson.
Suspected links to cyber fraud operations
Authorities suspected connections to transnational crime and cyber fraud schemes behind the attempted crossing. Cambodia was described as a hotspot for illegal call centers, where such operations were believed to be based.
The suspects had apparently tried to exploit the holiday period, when travel volumes were high and checks were harder to carry out, but the Navy reported that its forces had remained vigilant. The detainees were handed over to the competent authorities and now faced criminal consequences for the alleged illegal border crossing.
Navy stresses compliance with Thai law
The Navy emphasized that the arrests had been carried out strictly in line with Thai law, with particular attention to the Anti-Torture Act of 2022. Officials stated that the dignity and fundamental rights of those detained would be respected and that transparent and fair court proceedings were guaranteed.
“Our officers have been instructed to ensure humanitarian care.”
said Rear Admiral Parach.
Stepped-up action against criminal networks
The border command announced that it would intensify cooperation with other security agencies to strengthen surveillance and law enforcement along the eastern frontier. The stated goal was to prevent Thailand from being used as a hub or support base for international criminal groups and to tighten control along the eastern border.
Officials framed the operation as a signal to smugglers that Thailand’s borders would not become an “open shop” for illegal crossings, even during public holidays.
Fate of the detained Chinese nationals
The six Chinese nationals remained in custody while their identities and the precise circumstances of their planned departure were investigated. Authorities were examining whether they had been victims of smugglers or active members of a criminal network, with investigations described as progressing at full speed.
For the detainees, the new year began not with fireworks but in a cell, presented by Thai authorities as a clear warning to anyone seeking to violate Thai border laws.
