BANGKOK, THAILAND – Thailand’s military raised its alert level after an unidentified drone was detected near a critical offshore oil platform in the Gulf of Thailand, prompting an urgent investigation by the Defense Ministry.
Security alert near critical oil platform
The Thai Navy and air force were placed on heightened alert after the sighting of the unknown drone close to the installation, which was considered critical national infrastructure. The Defense Ministry launched an emergency inquiry amid suspicions of possible sabotage or espionage.
Incident unfolds amid tensions with Cambodia
The incident occurred during a period of already strained border relations with Cambodia. Defense Minister General Nattaphon Narkphanit confirmed that the drone had been detected and linked the response to existing security planning.
“This incident falls within scenarios that our security agencies have evaluated.”
said Nattaphon, defense minister. He stressed that the measures were a precaution to protect national interests rather than a hostile stance toward the neighboring country.
Fuel controls and disputed drone reports
Thailand’s tightened controls on fuel and military supplies heading to Cambodia formed the backdrop to the heightened tensions, and officials said the mysterious drone could be interpreted as retaliation or an attempt at intimidation. At the same time, Nattaphon rejected Cambodian reports that a Thai reconnaissance drone of the DP-20 type had been shot down.

Oil platforms drive push for anti-drone systems
The unidentified drone reportedly flew close to an offshore oil platform classified as part of Thailand’s critical national infrastructure. Nattaphon confirmed that companies linked to energy giant PTT had already submitted applications to procure anti-drone systems to protect such facilities. Officials argued that these measures were justified to safeguard the country’s energy supply, noting that the platforms were vital to Thailand’s energy security.
Investigators probe possible operators
Identifying who operated the drone was described as the central question of the investigation. More than 10,000 fishing boats worked in the Gulf of Thailand, many using commercial drones, but the flight path close to the platform was regarded as highly suspicious. Authorities were examining three scenarios: whether the drone belonged to a hostile party, to Thai operators, or to civilian users, with the intent behind the flight seen as decisive.
Air force and navy tighten surveillance
The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) and the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) significantly increased surveillance activities in the area following the incident. The Thai maritime enforcement command, Thai-MECC, coordinated the response as security experts warned of the growing threat posed by inexpensive drone technology that was also available to non-state actors.
Call for caution as probe continues
Despite the seriousness of the situation, Nattaphon urged restraint and warned against hasty conclusions, stressing that not every drone flight should automatically be viewed as a hostile act. Investigation of the incident was given top priority.
“It would be wrong if Thailand were to refrain from using its equipment.”
said Nattaphon, defense minister. He added that every loss was regrettable, while the situation remained tense and inquiries were ongoing.
