KO SAMUI, THAILAND – A 28-year-old British tourist was found dead and his friend unconscious in a luxury hotel on Chaweng Beach, triggering a police investigation into drugs and a mysterious cash theft.
Early-morning emergency at Chaweng Beach hotel
Around 4 a.m., police in Bo Phut received an emergency call after hotel staff discovered two unresponsive British guests. The 28-year-old Kris was found unconscious in the hotel lobby, while his friend Luke, also 28, was discovered lifeless in their shared room. Rescue workers began immediate resuscitation efforts and took both men to hospital, where Luke was pronounced dead at 4:53 a.m.
Night out ends with missing cash and collapse
Police reconstruction of the previous night suggested a chaotic sequence of events. At about 2:35 a.m., Kris returned to the hotel with a 21-year-old transgender woman he had met in a bar. Roughly half an hour later, Luke arrived accompanied by a Thai man, leaving four people briefly in the room. The transgender woman left a short time later, after which the situation escalated when Kris reported the theft of £1,500 (about €1,750) at reception and then collapsed.
Drug traces and pending toxicology results
An initial examination revealed no external injuries on Luke’s body. Officers found a plastic tube in his trouser pocket, described as the kind often used for marijuana, and preliminary tests indicated the presence of morphine in his system. Kris, who survived, was also being tested for drugs, while Luke’s Thai companion tested positive for methamphetamine. The exact cause of death was to be determined by an autopsy at the Police Hospital, with toxicology findings awaited.
Unanswered questions over drugs and stolen money
Police, led by Colonel Kanchawit Phoprasit, faced several open questions in the case.
“Where did the morphine come from? Is it the cause of death?”
said Kanchawit Phoprasit, police colonel. Investigators also examined what happened to the missing £1,500, after the transgender woman accused of theft was questioned and temporarily released. Officers were reviewing hotel surveillance footage to reconstruct the movements of everyone involved in detail.
Holiday on Ko Samui ends in tragedy
The incident highlighted a darker side of nightlife on the island, involving two young tourists, drugs and unfamiliar companions, ending with one man dead. While Kris recovered in hospital, Luke’s relatives at home were left to grieve and confront painful uncertainties. For them, the search for answers had only just begun and might never be fully resolved.
