ARANYAPRATHET, THAILAND – A devastating overnight fire destroyed part of the famous Rong Kluea Market on the Cambodian border, wiping out dozens of shops and the livelihoods of many traders.
Fire breaks out shortly after midnight
In the early hours of Friday, police received an emergency call at around 1:20 a.m. reporting a blaze in building B5 of the Rong Kluea Market in Aranyaprathet. Several fire trucks were dispatched immediately to the sprawling border complex. Firefighters battled the flames for more than an hour and managed to stop the blaze from spreading to tightly packed neighbouring structures.
Despite the rapid response, the destruction was extensive, with between 10 and 15 rental units completely burned out. Authorities reported that there were no injuries or fatalities in the incident.
Faulty wiring suspected as likely cause
Initial investigators quickly focused on the electrical system in the affected section of the market. Many of the damaged shops relied on makeshift wiring, with overloaded sockets and ageing cables long considered a known hazard in the older market halls. A short circuit was viewed as the most probable cause of the fire.
Forensic specialists were deployed to the scene to determine the exact origin of the blaze. Police stated that they ruled out any link between the fire and current border tensions in the region.
Cambodian traders lose their livelihoods
The destroyed stalls were owned by the Sa Kaeo provincial administration and were predominantly rented to Cambodian traders. They sold clothing, household goods and imported products, relying on the busy market as their sole source of income.
“They have lost everything – their goods, their cash boxes and often their documents as well.”
said a helper at the scene.
The economic damage to the stallholders was described as immense, leaving many families on the Cambodian side of the border without a financial safety net.
Blow to cross-border commerce
The Rong Kluea Market served as an important trading artery between Thailand and Cambodia, attracting thousands of shoppers across the border every day. Officials said the blaze would bring cross-border trade in the affected section to a standstill for weeks while damage assessments were carried out.
Police Colonel Chuchart Kongmuang was tasked with coordinating both the investigation and support measures for those who suffered losses. Local authorities indicated that reconstruction of the burned area was expected to begin quickly in order to restore commercial activity.
Warning signal for traditional markets
The disaster was seen as a dramatic warning sign for other traditional markets across Thailand that are struggling with outdated infrastructure. Experts had long called for stricter fire safety inspections in such commercial zones, arguing that ageing buildings and ad hoc installations posed growing risks.
Observers suggested that this fire could finally prompt stronger enforcement of fire safety controls at similar sites nationwide. For the Cambodian traders at Rong Kluea, however, a long struggle to rebuild their lives was only just beginning at Thailand’s frontier.
A market scarred beyond bricks and cables
Commentators noted that a market was more than a structure of concrete and wires, describing it instead as a place of everyday life, work, hope and human encounters. Walking through the charred passageways, people saw no active flames anymore, but many “burned-out existences,” as one account put it.
Locals and traders now faced the unresolved question of whether this border market would fully rise again, or whether the fire had destroyed more than just walls and merchandise.
