SAMUT PRAKAN, THAILAND – A late-night group ride near Suvarnabhumi Airport ended in a deadly chain-reaction crash that killed two women and left three other people in critical condition.
Late-night ride turns into deadly crash
On the Runway Road 3 ring route in Bang Phli, everything spiralled out of control at around 1 a.m., according to early witness statements. A group of four to five motorcycles was reportedly heading home after a meeting in the Krungthep Kreetha area. Witnesses said one bike at the front suddenly emitted smoke and then exploded, prompting following riders to swerve sharply in a fatal maneuver.
Wreckage, fire and desperate resuscitation
Emergency teams arrived to find four motorcycles torn apart on the road, with one bike in flames and five severely injured people lying motionless on the asphalt. Paramedics immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation on four victims in a race against time. For two of the injured, any help came too late; they were pronounced dead at the scene.
Victims identified, families informed
The fatalities were identified as Apinatchaya Khokkhachan and Phonphimon Thasi, both 32 years old. Forensic doctors at the Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindra Hospital carried out the initial examinations. The families of the deceased were informed and now faced the task of coping with the grim certainty and their grief, while the three critically injured victims fought for their lives in hospital.
Police probe possible illegal racing
Investigators stated that the exact cause of the accident remained unclear, but they assumed a tragic chain reaction. An initial group was believed to have lost control, causing their motorcycles to crash onto the road, before a second group, which included the victims, slammed into the wreckage after being unable to brake in time.
“We are waiting for statements from the survivors and are evaluating camera footage.”
said one investigator, according to police.
Speed and possible charges under scrutiny
A key question for police was whether the riders had been travelling too fast or even taking part in an unofficial race, which could lead to additional charges. The crash highlighted once again the dangers of night-time motorcycle traffic on poorly lit feeder roads around the vast metropolis, where serious accidents occurred repeatedly, especially in groups. The road was completely closed for several hours as rescuers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation and the airport fire brigade worked under difficult conditions.
Broader concerns over speed and group riding
The incident underscored how several motorcycles, high speed and an unexplained explosion could turn into a fatal trap within seconds. It renewed public debate about illegal races, group dynamics and overconfidence on Thailand’s roads. The report raised the broader question of how many more warnings were needed before speed was no longer seen as an adrenaline rush but recognised for what it was: a life-threatening risk.
