SRI RACHA, THAILAND – A 58-year-old trail runner died on Friday morning on the steep Khao-Chalak trail in Bang Phra subdistrict after an apparent cardiac arrest, despite immediate resuscitation efforts by fellow runners and rescue workers.
Emergency call from popular mountain trail
The incident was reported to the Sawang Prateep Sri Racha Foundation rescue center at around 8:15 a.m., according to the organization. The Khao-Chalak path in Chonburi province was regarded as a popular yet physically demanding route for runners and hikers.
Rescue teams from the foundation, together with emergency nurses from Samitivej Sri Racha Hospital, proceeded on foot for about one kilometer along a steep and difficult section to reach the man. The terrain on this part of the trail was described as challenging for emergency access.
CPR on scene could not save runner
At the site, responders found the runner unconscious on the trail. Other athletes who had discovered him had already begun CPR after they detected no pulse and noted that his body was already cool.
Rescue workers then deployed an automatic CPR device and continued resuscitation efforts for about 20 minutes. Medical staff ultimately declared the man dead at the scene.
Victim identified as local man from Chonburi
The deceased was later identified as Watchara MuenKhan, 58, from Ban Bueng district in Chonburi province. No identification documents were initially found on his body, which had complicated confirmation of his identity at the site.
The body was transferred to Laem Chabang Hospital for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, with cardiac arrest suspected. Officials said the examination would provide final clarity on the medical reasons for the sudden collapse.
Witness urges runners to carry phones
Trail runner Thawatchai KaewMeeSi, 54, was among the first people to find the victim. He told local media that his group had been on the path shortly before 8 a.m. when they saw the unconscious man.
“We immediately started CPR to maintain the oxygen supply to the brain and called for help.”
said Thawatchai KaewMeeSi, trail runner.
He urged other runners and visitors to always carry mobile phones on the route to coordinate rescue services more quickly in an emergency. Thawatchai stressed that early contact with rescue teams could be crucial when incidents occur on remote trail sections.
Police investigate, authorities warn older athletes
Officers from Sri Racha Police Station, led by Lieutenant Somkid BoonLoy, examined the site and questioned witnesses. Police documented the circumstances of the collapse as part of their routine investigation.
Authorities used the incident to call on users of the Khao-Chalak trail to exercise increased caution. They advised older athletes to undergo medical health checks before intense exertion and to assess their physical capabilities realistically.
Demanding trail remains popular despite tragedy
Despite the fatal incident, the Khao-Chalak trail remained a favored destination for runners in the region. The route was known for its scenic but demanding topography, attracting both local athletes and hiking enthusiasts.
Local officials and rescue organizations indicated they would continue to monitor safety on the trail while emphasizing personal responsibility and preparedness among users. The death of Watchara served as a reminder of the potential risks of strenuous outdoor sports, particularly for older participants.
