MOKPO, SOUTH KOREA – A bar assault on four Thai men in the port city of Mokpo highlighted how border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia had spilled over into violence abroad.
Thai men assaulted after revealing nationality
The attack took place in the Mokpo-Daebul district of South Jeolla Province, where four Thai men in a karaoke bar were confronted by a group of 15 to 20 Cambodian nationals. The group asked which country they were from, and when the men replied that they were Thai, the atmosphere reportedly changed abruptly. Without further warning, the assailants began hitting the victims, using bottles as weapons.
Serious head injuries and shock
Two of the Thai men suffered serious head injuries and were taken to a hospital for urgent treatment. The other two sustained lighter injuries but were left in a state of severe shock. Local police opened an investigation into the incident, which deeply unsettled the roughly 200,000 Thai migrant workers and students living in South Korea.
Thai authorities issue warning in South Korea
Thailand’s Foreign Ministry and the Thai embassy in Seoul responded immediately by issuing an official travel advisory for Thais residing in South Korea. The guidance urged Thai citizens to exercise particular caution and to avoid areas with large Cambodian communities for the time being.
“Avoid conflicts with Cambodian groups and be especially alert in crowds,”
said the Thai embassy in its statement.
Border conflict seen as driver of overseas violence
Experts interpreted the assault as a dangerous extension of the bilateral conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. The two Southeast Asian neighbours had experienced violent clashes along their border for weeks, and these tensions appeared to be shifting into third countries where citizens of both nations met in search of work. This was described as the first reported case in which the border dispute had turned into open violence between foreigners in a completely different country.
Pressure on police to prevent further clashes
South Korean police came under pressure to prevent any further unrest, with investigations proceeding at full speed. Key questions remained over whether the attack was a spontaneous act or a planned act of retaliation, and whether additional assaults might follow. Security authorities from both Southeast Asian states were called upon to de-escalate the situation, not only along their shared border but also in overseas communities.
Growing concern for Thais abroad
The incident set a worrying precedent, suggesting that national conflicts could increasingly be carried into third countries. Thais worldwide were urged to remain particularly vigilant amid the heightened tensions. Hopes now rested on a swift diplomatic solution to the Thailand–Cambodia dispute before more innocent people abroad were caught between the opposing sides.
