Outrage over Phuket taxi stunt video

Tourist filmed hanging out of moving taxi as driver records instead of stopping

PHUKET, THAILAND – A viral video of a foreign tourist hanging out of a moving taxi window in Phuket has triggered public outrage and renewed calls for stricter road safety enforcement.

Tourist caught leaning out of taxi window

On Sunday, 7 December, a Thai motorist driving behind a white taxi recorded a foreign passenger with his entire upper body hanging out of the front passenger window on a winding road in the Patong area. As the man risked his life, a friend on the back seat also filmed him, while the taxi driver appeared to be recording the scene on his own phone. The witness could be heard in the clip loudly insulting both the tourist and the driver.

Social media users demand consequences

The video spread rapidly on Facebook, where Thai users reacted with unanimous anger and demanded immediate action.

“The taxi driver did not warn him, but filmed him instead!”

said an unnamed user. Another commenter reacted with biting sarcasm:

“I hope he falls off.”

said another unnamed user.

Calls for action against driver and passenger

Many online users urged the police and the Land Transport Department to investigate the case and revoke the taxi driver’s licence. The incident fuelled debate over who should be held responsible: the reckless tourist pulling a dangerous stunt, or the driver who ignored his duty of care. Commenters largely blamed both, with one asking:

“If someone dies because of something like this, who will take responsibility?”

said an unnamed commenter.

Allegations of profit motive

Some users speculated that the driver had received extra money to film the stunt.

“Do not put money above safety!”

said another unnamed commenter. The growing criticism added to pressure on local authorities to clarify whether they would pursue the case.

Legal grey area under Thai traffic law

Thai law did not explicitly regulate passengers sticking body parts out of moving vehicles, but the behaviour could still be deemed illegal if it endangered others or contributed to an accident. Such conduct could fall under negligent action, with penalties depending on the consequences of the incident. Observers noted that if the tourist had been injured or caused a crash, the repercussions for everyone involved would have been far more severe.

Police yet to respond to viral clip

So far, the local police had not issued any statement or taken visible measures in response to the video. However, mounting public anger increased pressure on officials to act. Commenters demanded a clear signal that similar behaviour would not be tolerated on Thailand’s roads.

Part of a wider trend of risky stunts

The Phuket incident was seen as part of a broader trend of life‑threatening stunts performed for social media attention. Observers pointed to repeated cases of people risking their lives just to gain likes and views online. In a recent, separate case in Pathum Thani, a Thai woman allegedly suffering from mental health issues jumped onto the hood of a slowly moving car.

Damage to Phuket’s tourism image

Commentators warned that such images were harming the reputation of Phuket as a safe, family‑friendly holiday destination. Videos showing reckless tourists and allegedly criminal taxi drivers were seen as undermining that image. Many argued that authorities must respond clearly and send the message that safety comes first and that anyone who violates this principle, whether local or visitor, should face tough consequences.
