KOH SAMUI, THAILAND – A French tourist was rescued in a major nighttime operation after breaking his ankle in a fall at Hin Lad Waterfall.
Tourist injured on slippery rocks
On Sunday afternoon, 7 December, 48-year-old Christophe from France explored the upper section of the popular Hin Lad Waterfall on Koh Samui. He suddenly slipped on a large rock and suffered a severe fall. The man broke his ankle, could no longer walk and was stranded in a hard-to-reach spot high up in steep terrain.
Seven students become first responders
A group of seven Thai students happened to be nearby and immediately became his first helpers. The young men had overtaken the Frenchman while hiking and saw the fall happen. They stayed with the injured tourist, calmed him and secured the accident site while help was on the way.
No mobile signal forces improvised alarm
Because there was no mobile phone reception in the remote area, the group sent another hiker down the path to call emergency number 1669. This improvised alarm set the rescue chain in motion. The students’ actions bought valuable time until professional rescuers could reach the scene.
Multi-agency rescue launched at dusk
The coordinator of the disaster prevention agency, Poonchai Khamloon, ordered a multi-agency operation involving officials, marine police, air force soldiers and rescue teams. As darkness fell, the teams struggled up the steep ascent toward the accident site. It took more than an hour before they reached the injured man and took him into professional care.
Four-hour rope operation in the dark
The evacuation turned into a delicate technical challenge requiring ropes and special equipment. Rescuers had to lower the tourist through rough terrain in complete darkness, an operation that lasted around four hours. Any wrong step along the route could have had serious consequences for both the victim and the teams.
Hospital reports stable condition
Around 10 p.m., the French tourist finally reached a waiting ambulance and was taken to Koh Samui Hospital. Hospital staff later reported that he was in stable condition and receiving treatment. Christophe was deeply grateful and personally thanked the Thai students and the rescue teams for their efforts.
“Without their help, the situation would have become life-threatening.”
