Airbus races to patch A320 jets

Software update ordered for thousands of aircraft over solar storm risk

TOULOUSE, FRANCE – Airbus ordered an urgent software update for thousands of A320 aircraft worldwide after warnings that intense solar activity could compromise flight control computers, triggering major disruption to global air travel.

Mass software change for A320 fleet

Airbus confirmed on Friday, 28 November, that it had mandated an immediate software replacement on a large number of its best‑selling A320 jets. Industry sources cited around 6,000 aircraft, more than half of the global A320 fleet. The company acknowledged that the measure would affect flight operations and passenger services worldwide.

Risk from intense solar radiation

The manufacturer linked the move to a serious safety concern related to heightened solar activity.

“Intensive solar radiation could damage important data for the flight control computer.”

said Airbus, the manufacturer. Solar storms were described as capable of generating electromagnetic pulses that could disrupt computer systems, with the risk particularly high for aircraft at cruising altitude.

Major airlines face cancellations and delays

The impact on airlines was already significant. American Airlines initially had to inspect 340 jets, with 150 aircraft still awaiting updates. Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) had already cancelled 65 flights.

Air New Zealand and Gulf low‑cost carriers respond

Air New Zealand warned of further disruptions and stressed its approach to the update schedule.

“Every A320 will be updated before the next passenger flight.”

said Air New Zealand, the airline. Low‑cost carriers in Saudi Arabia also reported delays linked to the update process.

Limited effect on UK carriers

Authorities in the United Kingdom sought to calm concerns, saying that the impact on British airlines was minimal. While the broader global network was under strain, British carriers reported only limited operational effects from the software campaign.

Precautionary principle and global disruption

According to the company, the emergency action was guided by the principle of maximum caution in aviation safety. The intense solar radiation was considered capable of corrupting critical flight data, prompting the preventive update. For thousands of passengers, the result was cancelled holidays, abandoned business trips and a trembling global route network.

Long patching timelines for 6,000 aircraft

Airbus pushed for the software updates to be implemented immediately across all affected aircraft. With about 6,000 jets involved worldwide, the process was expected to take days, possibly weeks, before every aircraft was patched. Airlines now had to reshuffle engine maintenance schedules and organise replacement aircraft to maintain capacity.

Maintenance bottlenecks slow progress

Air New Zealand announced that each A320 would be updated while still on the ground before returning to passenger service. However, available maintenance capacity was limited and queues for work on the aircraft were already long. These constraints added further pressure to carriers already juggling fleet and crew planning.

Advice for passengers with upcoming flights

Travellers booked on an A320 in the coming days were advised to check their flight status directly with their airline. Short‑ and medium‑haul routes in Europe, Asia and North America were described as particularly affected, and Thailand was also expected to see disruptions. Airbus stated that updates would be completed as quickly as possible, but the operational turmoil had already begun.

A technician involved in the work summed up the safety rationale behind the grounding and delays.

“Better stranded on the ground than in the air with a computer problem.”

said a technician, aviation maintenance specialist. The emphasis throughout the industry remained firmly on safety over punctuality as the solar‑linked software risk was addressed.
