KOH SAMUI, THAILAND – A French tourist was arrested on the island after police said he stole luxury items worth more than 246,000 baht from his neighbor’s villa.
Neighbor reports break-in at Bo Phut villa
A 25-year-old man from Chiang Mai reported a break-in at his exclusive villa in the Bo Phut district. Investigators quickly focused on a neighboring foreign resident after reviewing security footage.
“Security cameras showed a foreign neighbor entering the victim’s house,”
said a police spokesman.
Police recover luxury items in suspect’s home
On 27 November, officers went with the victim to the suspect’s residence, where the neighbor immediately recognized his own suitcase and a portable speaker in the living room. A search of the villa uncovered 13 stolen luxury items hidden in a brown suitcase. The haul included a diamond ring valued at 150,000 baht, a MacBook, an Acer laptop, three watches, several designer perfumes, a JBL speaker and a pair of Nike Jordan sneakers, with a total value of 246,000 baht.
French suspect admits theft but refuses paperwork
The French suspect, identified as Mr. Arezi, initially confessed through an interpreter.
“Yes, I stole the items,”
said Arezi, according to police. He then refused to sign the official documents, but officers proceeded to charge him with theft from a dwelling and took him to Bo Phut Police Station.
Possible five-year prison term under Thai law
Under Thai law, the offense carried a potential prison sentence of one to five years and a fine between 20,000 and 100,000 baht. For the 29-year-old visitor, the holiday on the island could now turn into a lengthy stay behind bars, as authorities reiterated their zero-tolerance stance toward crimes committed by foreign nationals.
Authorities stress tough stance on foreign offenders
Officials stated that some foreigners had tried to exploit the relaxed holiday atmosphere on Thailand’s islands for criminal purposes. The close cooperation between local police and immigration authorities was described as making it increasingly difficult for thieves to operate. Authorities emphasized that Thailand remained a safe travel destination, but anyone breaking the law would face the full consequences.
