PATONG, THAILAND – Thai authorities carried out mass drug tests on nightlife staff along Patong’s Bangla Road in a high-profile security operation aimed at reassuring tourists.
Large-scale evening operation on Bangla Road
On Sunday evening, officials tested 220 employees working on the famous Bangla Road for drugs. The coordinated operation began at 6 p.m., with a large contingent from the police, local administration and medical services arriving on site.
“We wanted to strengthen the safety of tourists and support our ‘White Community’ campaign.”
said an official.
Agencies join forces to project a clean image
The Kathu District Office, tourist police and Patong Municipality worked closely together during the checks. Their shared message was that Phuket presented itself as a clean and orderly destination.
Officers carried out random urine tests on all 220 people tested, covering clubs, bars and restaurants along the strip. No venue type was exempt from the operation.

“No drugs were found,”
said the Kathu District Office, expressing pride in the outcome and calling it a complete success for the “White Community” initiative.
Patong’s mayor Lalita Maneesri appeared in person to support the action and underline the local administration’s backing. Officials framed the results as a signal to visitors that entertainment staff were subject to strict oversight.
Follow-up patrols reinforce security message
At 7:30 p.m., a second phase began as special patrol units swept the entire Bangla Road and its side streets. Authorities announced that similar operations would continue.
“Such actions will continue,”
said the authorities, explaining that Phuket wanted to polish its image as a safe holiday destination.
They said the “Strong Tourism Community” campaign was running at full speed, timed to coincide with the start of the main tourist season.
Implications for holidaymakers
Officials stated that Thailand was investing heavily in the sense of security for its guests, with clean clubs and drug-free employees as explicit goals.
“We will maintain safety and order in Patong,”
said the police.
Tourists were told they could expect a closely monitored party strip with no unpleasant surprises, as authorities aimed to keep the area under tight control during the high season.
