PHUKET, THAILAND – Phuket International Airport was recognised with a Level 2 carbon accreditation for measurable cuts in its greenhouse gas emissions.
International climate award for Phuket hub
The Airport Carbon Accreditation programme granted Phuket International Airport the Level 2 “Reduction” status for its climate efforts. The certificate was confirmed in an official document and was valid until 3 October 2026. According to the document, the airport had implemented a structured system to manage its carbon footprint.

said an official document.
Independent verification of emissions data
The airport examined all of its emissions in detail and reported measurable progress. Independent auditors from Wise and Wiser Thailand reviewed the figures and approved the findings. The accreditation was described as a major achievement for Airports of Thailand (AoT), which operates the facility.
CO2 figures for 2023 under scrutiny
Published 2023 data showed direct emissions (Scope 1) of 2,248.86 tonnes of CO₂. A further 22,896.86 tonnes of CO₂ came from purchased electricity (Scope 2). The auditors classified the reporting as providing a “reasonable level of assurance,” a level of transparency required for the coveted accreditation.
Energy upgrades drive reductions
Behind the scenes, the airport team introduced a broad set of measures. The energy efficiency of terminal buildings was significantly improved, with old air-conditioning systems and outdated lighting replaced.
“We now manage our fuel and energy consumption much more effectively.”
said an AoT spokesperson.
Partners drawn into climate efforts
Airlines, shop operators and other businesses on airport grounds were actively involved in the climate protection programme. The airport highlighted this wider participation as key to reducing emissions on site. According to AoT, these steps marked only the beginning of a longer transition.
Long-term goal of net zero emissions
The airport committed itself to the long-term target of “Net Zero Emissions.” Additional initiatives to cut CO₂ were already in planning, in line with the broader sustainability strategy of AoT.

said an official statement.
Phuket aims to lead Thailand’s green aviation push
Phuket sought to be not only a dream island for tourists but also a pioneer of a green future for Thailand’s aviation sector. The project was portrayed as a flagship initiative with potential model character for other airports in the country. At the same time, the broader debate continued over whether such certifications were sufficient to address the aviation industry’s role as a major global CO₂ emitter.
