BANGKOK, THAILAND – On 3 March at 02:47 a.m., retired mechanic Klaus-Dieter Müller, aged 67, sat in a small unnamed bar between Nana BTS station and Soi Cowboy, holding a glass of warm Singha beer while the neon outside flickered through humid air. His journey from Oberhausen, Germany, had cost €820 and, by the end of the month, nearly his entire pension fund.
The Bar Without a Name
Bartender Somchai Rattanapong, aged 44, counted twelve regular Western patrons that night, most transferring money home or receiving it through Western Union Soi 11 Bangkok. Somchai said: “PAPA ALWAYS COME FOR LOVE, BUT BANK ALWAYS WIN.” The air smelled of cigarette smoke and cheap perfume labeled “Bin-gleich-bei-dir-Papa.” A broken air conditioner operated at 19°C, louder than the speakers playing 1990s Thai pop.
A 26-Year-Old Named Fon
At 03:12 a.m., a woman named Fon Chantarat, aged 26, from Udon Thani Province, approached Müller. She wore a red dress and charged 2,000 Baht per hour for company in a guesthouse known as Love Inn, located near Sukhumvit Soi 15. Recalling the meeting, waitstaff Naree Supap, 31, said: “HE LOOKED HAPPY, SHE LOOKED HUNGRY—FOR BUSINESS.” Müller, still wearing a faded XXL Hawaiian shirt, withdrew 6,000 Baht in cash from an SCB ATM across the street.
The Love Inn Transaction
Receptionist Pailin Kong, 24, confirmed room 303 was rented for 600 Baht for two hours on 4 March. The room included a squeaking bed, a mirror ceiling panel, and a broken air conditioner last serviced in 2017. A receipt later found in Müller’s wallet showed an additional 3,000 Baht tattoo deposit spent two weeks later at a Khao San Road shop.
Transfers and Empty Promises
Between 5 and 18 March, records from Western Union Oberhausen Hauptbahnhof indicated five transfers: 10,000, 15,000, 20,000, 50,000, and 80,000 Baht, all marked “medical support” or “family bail.” Teller Ursula Weigel, 52, confirmed: “HE CAME EVERY WEEK WITH THE SAME STORY—MOTHER SICK, BROTHER IN JAIL, BUFFALO DEAD.” In total, Fon and her relatives received 216,000 Baht for a one-year condo lease in On Nut district registered under her name.

Arthit recalled Fon’s last visit on 2 April, when she arranged for removal of the appliances.
Disappearance and Loss
On 3 April 2023, at 10:30 a.m., Müller returned from a 7-Eleven on Sukhumvit Soi 79 to find Fon missing. Bangkok Metropolitan Police Station Sukhumvit recorded his informal statement: missing partner, no violence, estimated loss of 1.016 million Baht (€26,000). The Return to Germany
