BANGKOK, THAILAND — The Airport Rail Link announced a full rollout of EMV contactless ticketing for all passengers beginning on 8 November 2025, replacing coin and smartcard systems at every gate.
Official Launch at Makkasan Station
At Makkasan Station on 4 November 2024, Pichet Kunadhamraks, Director-General of the Department of Rail Transport (DRT), presented the new system together with executives from Asia Era One Company Limited, operator of the Airport Rail Link. Kunadhamraks stated: “THIS IS A MAJOR STEP TOWARD THE FUTURE OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN THAILAND.” The announcement confirmed that passengers will check in and out using any credit or debit card supporting EMV contactless technology.
Faster Boarding and Fare Accuracy
During the demonstration, DRT engineers showed that the new gates record each tap within less than 0.3 seconds and automatically calculate the fare between start and destination stations. The department expects processing times at turnstiles to drop by 40 percent, reducing queues at high-traffic hubs such as Phaya Thai and Suvarnabhumi Airport stations.
Benefits for Tourists and Locals
According to Pichet Kunadhamraks, the upgrade will support both Bangkok residents and international visitors, many of whom previously faced language and currency obstacles at ticket machines. “TOURISTS WILL NO LONGER NEED TO CARRY SMALL CHANGE OR QUEUE FOR TOKENS,” he said at the press briefing attended by over 60 media representatives.
Digital Transport Initiative
The Department of Rail Transport reported that the Airport Rail Link carries an average of 90,000 passengers daily across its eight stations over a total distance of 28 kilometers. By adopting EMV infrastructure, Asia Era One Company Limited expects to reduce cash-handling costs by approximately 15 million baht per year and simplify integration with future citywide smart mobility systems.
Technology Testing Timeline
Between June and September 2025, the DRT scheduled three trial phases at Ramkhamhaeng and Makkasan stations to ensure compatibility with Visa, Mastercard, and UnionPay cards. Technicians from the Bank of Thailand’s Payment Systems Department, led by Somchai Sujjapongse, will oversee compliance and data security under national electronic payment standards.
Passenger Experience
Field tests carried out on 20 pilot journeys showed a measurable drop in restroom congestion and platform dwell times, as faster entry reduced overall boarding intervals by an average of six seconds per passenger. In his closing remarks, Kunadhamraks concluded: “WITH CONTACTLESS ENTRY, TRAIN TRAVEL IN BANGKOK BECOMES FASTER, SAFER, AND MORE RELIABLE FOR EVERYONE.”
