Van bursts into flames on Sukhumvit Road

Father and daughter escape unharmed as family car explodes outside Sri Racha District Office

SRI RACHA, THAILAND – A late-night emergency turned tragic early Thursday when a family van caught fire and exploded outside the Sri Racha District Office, leaving behind only a burnt shell but no injuries.

Flames engulf vehicle before firefighters arrive

The incident occurred around 1:10 a.m. on Sukhumvit Road, one of Thailand’s major coastal highways connecting Bangkok and Pattaya. Firefighters from the Sri Racha Municipal Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Unit were alerted to a vehicle fully ablaze in front of the district office and immediately dispatched two engines, “Koh Loy 2” and “Koh Loy 82.”

When they arrived, the Toyota van, registered อษ 9315 Bangkok, was already consumed by flames. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control within 15 minutes, but the vehicle had been completely destroyed.

Breakdown rescue turns disastrous

According to witnesses, the young driver had suffered a mechanical breakdown while driving her petrol-powered van along the busy road. In distress, she called her father for help. He arrived with his pickup truck to tow the van to safety in the nearby district office car park, intending to have it inspected by a mechanic in the morning.

As the pair reached the entrance gate to the premises, smoke suddenly began rising from the van’s engine compartment. Within seconds, thick black smoke was followed by flames that spread rapidly. The father stopped immediately, but the fire took hold too fast to intervene.

Both father and daughter managed to retreat to safety as the blaze intensified. Fire crews could do little more than contain the inferno and prevent further damage.

Possible fuel leak suspected

Initial assessments from fire department experts suggested a fuel leak may have triggered the explosion. Investigators believe that petrol likely escaped from a damaged line or tank during towing and came into contact with a hot engine component or exhaust pipe, igniting almost instantly.

The intense heat burst the van’s tires and shattered the windows, while the smell of burnt fuel and melted plastic lingered long after the flames were extinguished.

No injuries but full loss

Despite the scale of the fire, both the driver and her father escaped without burns or smoke inhalation. Authorities described the vehicle as a total loss. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact mechanical fault that caused the breakdown and subsequent leak.

For the family, the event was a mix of relief and loss — relief that no one was hurt, but grief over the destruction of their vehicle.

No injuries reported
Vehicle completely destroyed
Fuel system failure suspected
Investigation ongoing

AS ONE OFFICIAL NOTED, “EVEN A TINY FUEL LEAK COMBINED WITH ENGINE HEAT CAN TURN INTO A MAJOR FIRE WITHIN SECONDS.”
