BURIRAM, THAILAND – As monsoon clouds sweep across Thailand from May to October, many households watch tonnes of rainwater run unused off their roofs. One homeowner in Buriram decided to change that. He built a full rainwater harvesting system, documenting how careful planning, affordable materials and routine maintenance turned seasonal downpours into a steady household resource.
Harnessing Thailand’s seasonal rains
Thailand’s rainy season offers enormous potential for water collection, especially in regions where public supply can be unreliable or unsuitable for consumption. By installing a private system, residents can reduce costs and gain independence from municipal distribution networks that sometimes struggle with quality.
The project featured a 5,000-litre storage tank to serve garden irrigation, washing machines and general cleaning. Drinking use was deliberately excluded, avoiding costly filtration. The homeowner explained that in his area, tap water was only partially potable, making rainwater a safe, efficient supplement for non-drinking needs.
Planning and site selection
He began with basic calculations: roof area, rainfall volume and daily water demand. With a roof of about 80 square metres, the collection potential was significant. A budget of 30,000 baht was set as the upper limit, though the total cost later came in under 20,000 baht, excluding optional labour.
The system was positioned beside the house for easy access. Stability proved essential; the tank rested on a level concrete base, slightly elevated to allow natural flow from the roof gutter. Regular access to the lid for cleaning and inspection was also part of the design from the start.
Materials and construction
Parts were sourced from Thai hardware suppliers including Ruangsangthai, HomePro and Thai Watsadu. A summary of item costs included:
• 5,000-litre plastic tank – 12,000 baht
• PVC pipes and fittings – 2,500 baht
• Basic filter – 500 baht
• Electric pump – 2,500 baht
• Tools and sealants – 1,000 baht
The step-by-step process involved preparing the concrete base, connecting roof gutters and filters, assembling sealed PVC piping, and adding an overflow outlet with small ventilation. A protective circuit was installed for the pump to ensure electrical safety.
He described the first rainfall test as straightforward: once the system filled, every joint was inspected for leaks, and pressure from the pump was confirmed adequate for watering.
Maintenance under tropical conditions
Regular upkeep is crucial in Thailand’s hot, humid climate. Monthly tasks included cleaning filters, running the pump, and checking for mosquito entry. _“STANDING WATER CAN BREED MOSQUITOS AND DAMAGE WATER QUALITY,”_ he warned, noting that all covers should stay closed when not in use.
Annual maintenance involved emptying and rinsing the tank with a light chlorine solution before refilling. The homeowner emphasised avoiding roofs with chemical paint or pesticide residues, as they could contaminate the stored water.
Safe, practical use
The captured water served daily purposes: garden watering, laundry, and household cleaning. Pets were given filtered water separately. The key hygienic recommendations were clear:
• Never use rainwater for drinking without a multi-stage purification system
• Keep tanks sealed to block insects and debris
• Inspect regularly during and after the rainy season
He also cautioned against common DIY mistakes such as unstable foundations, underpowered pumps, and cheap plastic tanks without UV protection, which can degrade under Thailand’s strong sun.
Costs and long-term benefits
The full installation cost roughly 19,500 baht, demonstrating that an effective system can be built on a modest budget. Hiring a technician for assembly would add another 3,000–5,000 baht, but the owner found self-installation manageable with basic tools.
Since completing the project, the household’s water bills have dropped noticeably. More importantly, the garden could now be maintained even during drier months. _“PLANNING AND MAINTENANCE ARE EVERYTHING,”_ the builder noted, adding that the process was both practical and environmentally worthwhile.
