PHUKET, THAILAND – A 47-year-old New Zealand tourist was found dead in her hotel room near the popular Kata Beach, prompting a police investigation into a suspected overdose involving alcohol and prescription medicine.
Police respond to distress call
Around 2:45 p.m. on 27 October 2025, local officers from the Karon Police Station received an emergency call from hotel staff reporting the discovery of an unresponsive guest. Forensic specialists and a medical examiner quickly arrived on site.
Inside the quiet room, investigators found the woman lying motionless on her bed. There were no visible signs of physical injury or struggle. On the bedside table stood three opened cans of alcohol and two cocktail glasses, alongside several prescription medications, including antidepressants.
Companion recounts final hours
A 49-year-old German man, identified as a friend of the victim, gave a detailed statement to police. He said both had spent the evening drinking at a bar in Kata before returning to the hotel around 1 a.m.
“We had another drink in the room, shared an intimate moment, and then went to sleep,” he told investigators. The following day, he awoke when housekeeping knocked at the door. “When I tried to wake her, she wasn’t breathing,” he said.
Verification and forensic findings
Authorities reviewed CCTV footage and key-card access logs, confirming the timeline given by the witness. Bar employees reported nothing unusual. Toxicology tests on the German man were negative for drugs and alcohol.
