BANGKOK, THAILAND – A pre-dawn crash on the Kanchanaphisek Road brought hours of gridlock to Bangkok’s northern suburbs after a pickup truck slammed into a large overhead traffic sign, causing it to collapse across all exit lanes.
Early morning collision
The accident occurred around 5:30 a.m. on Monday in Nonthaburi province, northwest of central Bangkok. Police from the Bang Bua Thong station were alerted by residents after a grey Isuzu pickup travelling at high speed struck the metal support pole of an overhead gantry sign near kilometre marker 44+250.
Initial reports suggested the vehicle had been on a feeder road, but surveillance footage later showed it was actually speeding along the main carriageway when it crashed directly into the central pillar, coming to rest on the median strip.
Driver fled the scene
When officers arrived, they found the vehicle wrecked but no driver. The motorist had fled before police reached the site. Authorities launched a search, vowing to locate the person responsible. Sitthichai Saraphrom, head of the Bang Bua Thong Highway Division, said the driver would face charges for damaging state property.
The fallen structure, and the extensive delays it caused, underscored the consequences of the crash. The sign, part of Thailand’s national highway system, belongs to the public road inventory, meaning its destruction carries criminal as well as civil liability.
Citywide traffic chaos
The steel sign collapsed across all three exit lanes, cutting off a vital section of the Outer Ring Road, which connects Bangkok with Samut Prakan, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Ayutthaya. Officials redirected traffic onto a feeder route, but the closure triggered severe congestion stretching for several kilometres.
Commuters attempting to enter the capital for morning work hours faced major disruptions. Witnesses described the road as nearly at a standstill, with thousands of vehicles caught in the backlog through the height of rush hour.
Hours-long recovery operation
By 8 a.m., rescue crews deployed a crane to remove the heavy steel frame from the surface. According to JS100 Radio, the operation was delicate and time‑consuming, as crews had to ensure the structure could be safely lifted without further damage or risk to workers.
Normal traffic resumed only around 10 a.m., nearly five hours after the crash. For Bangkok’s weary commuters, it was a morning marked by frustration and lost time.
Reminder of infrastructure vulnerabilities
Kanchanaphisek Road, often called the Bangkok Outer Ring Road, is one of the capital’s most critical traffic arteries. The incident again highlighted how a single road obstruction can paralyse major parts of the transport network, raising broader questions about safety monitoring and infrastructure resilience along Thailand’s busiest highways.
