PATTAYA, THAILAND – Police broke up an illegal motorcycle race on the Sukhumvit–Pattaya Road in the early hours of Sunday, detaining about ten riders and seizing three machines.
Illegal night race ended
Officers responded to multiple complaints from residents about loud engines and dangerous manoeuvres and arrived on the scene at around 2:00 am. They found a group of roughly 20 young people racing along the main road. Many fled when police moved in, but officers detained about ten participants and recorded their details before taking them to the station.
Young riders detained
Police said the riders were aged between 14 and 19. Three motorcycles were impounded and remain in police custody while investigators examine them for technical alterations commonly used in illegal racing. A police spokesperson said, “We take such incidents very seriously. It is not only about the safety of the youths but also about protecting the public.”
Community alarm after repeated incidents
The Sukhumvit–Pattaya Road is a well-known meeting point for young motorcyclists and has been the subject of increasing complaints in recent weeks. One local resident told reporters, “It is almost unbearable when engines roar in the middle of the night. We are afraid something bad will happen.” The protests from neighbours prompted the swift police action.
Parents notified and summoned
Police said they informed the parents of the detained youths and summoned them to the station. Officers urged families to supervise their children more closely and to discuss the dangers of illegal street racing. The authorities stressed the importance of involving parents in prevention efforts.
Prevention and increased patrols
Beyond immediate enforcement, police announced plans to increase patrols and visibility on the road to deter further illegal races. They also said they would work with schools and families on educational measures to raise awareness of the risks. A police spokesperson added, “We do not want to hand out punishments; we want to prevent accidents.”

Investigations are continuing to determine whether any of the detained riders had previously taken part in similar incidents. If technical inspections reveal illegal modifications, the owners could face further sanctions. Authorities warned that repeat offenders could expect stricter measures.
