Phuket, Thailand – A 56-year-old Russian tourist died after being pulled from the sea at Karon Beach on Phuket, local authorities said, bringing a holiday to a sudden and tragic end.
Evening rescue at popular beach
The incident occurred around 18:45 near Nong Harn Public Park, a busy stretch of sand frequented by tourists and locals. Police said the man, identified as Andrei Chekhirov, had arrived on the island with his family only hours earlier to begin a ten-day stay.
Attempts to revive on the sand and at hospital
Lifeguards pulled Chekhirov from the water after he signalled for help and immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the beach. “Our colleagues did everything to save the man,” a spokesperson for the rescue team said. He was taken to Chalong Hospital where medical staff continued resuscitation efforts, but doctors were unable to revive him.
What witnesses described
Police reported that Chekhirov had been alone in the water for about 30 minutes before he suddenly signalled for help. His wife, Zarina Chekhirhova, 43, told police: “He was swimming as usual, then he suddenly raised his arm. The lifeguards were immediately there.”
Investigation and consular support
Karon police opened an investigation and said they had ruled out third-party involvement. Police chief Khundet Na Nongkhai confirmed that the Russian consulate had been notified and that the body had been transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital for further examination. “We have informed the Russian consulate and are continuing to investigate to determine the exact cause of death,” he said.
Investigators said they would look into whether underlying health issues or local sea conditions, including currents, had contributed to the incident. A final report had not been released.
Warnings about dangerous currents
Lifeguards on Karon Beach have been warning visitors about strong currents and high waves in recent days, especially in areas marked with red “no swimming” flags. Rescue teams urged beachgoers to heed the warnings, saying incidents often occurred when warnings were ignored or when the force of the surf was underestimated.
Family assisted by authorities
The tourist’s wife and other relatives were being supported by staff from the Russian consulate, authorities said. Police added they would keep the family informed of the investigation and assist with arrangements to repatriate the deceased.
The case remains under active investigation as authorities work to establish the precise circumstances surrounding the death.
