MUKDAHAN, THAILAND – A seven-year-old boy was killed when lightning struck a group of children playing under a tree on the afternoon of 17 October, rescuers and villagers said.
Fatal strike during play
The accident occurred at about 4:00pm in the village of Ban Luean Charoen in Dong Luang district, Mukdahan province. The boy, identified as seven-year-old Montakan, was playing with five friends beneath a krabok tree roughly one kilometre from his home when a sudden, bright flash hit the area.
Rescue teams who attended the scene said Montakan fell to the ground after the strike; his clothing and hair caught fire. Medical responders pronounced him dead at the site.
Scene and eyewitness accounts
Witnesses described a startling, instantaneous event. “It was utterly silent, then a blinding light, a bang — and the boy lay motionless,” a neighbour said. Photographs and accounts from villagers noted scorched branches and shattered wood where the lightning hit.
Montakan’s grandfather, Jamlong, 56, was among the first to reach the child. “I saw him lying there, his clothes burned, his hair singed,” he said tearfully. He attempted first aid while relatives called emergency services, but his efforts could not save the boy.
Community mourning and funeral preparations
The family later brought Montakan’s body home to prepare for funeral rites, with neighbours assisting and offering condolences. Teachers and friends remembered him as cheerful and helpful, and villagers gathered to support the grieving household.
Local media reported a deep sense of shock in Ban Luean Charoen, where residents said they had not expected lightning on a day with only light cloud cover.
Investigation and official warnings
Police, rescue teams and local authorities secured the site after the call and inspected the damaged tree. Specialists from the meteorological agency said they would investigate how lightning struck despite seemingly stable weather.
Officials reminded the public that lightning can strike even without rain or thunder, particularly during transitional periods between the rainy and dry seasons. Authorities urged parents and guardians to discourage children from sheltering under trees during storms or when the sky darkens.
The tragedy left the village asking how such a sudden strike could so quickly end a young life, and served as a stark warning about the unpredictable dangers of lightning.
