PHUKET, THAILAND – A transgender sex worker who uses the name Barbie was seriously injured after a client assaulted her and fled with 10,000 baht following a paid encounter on Patong’s Bangla Road, authorities and witnesses said.
Attack on Bangla Road
Barbie said she had met the man through a dating app and agreed to a paid encounter, charging 1,000 baht for the service. According to her account and corroborating eyewitnesses, the client demanded a refund after the encounter. When Barbie refused, the man repeatedly struck her before taking 10,000 baht from her possession and leaving the scene.
Severely hurt, Barbie briefly chased the attacker in her underwear but abandoned the pursuit because she feared further violence, she told reporters.
Social media plea and investigation
Following the assault, Barbie posted graphic photographs on social media showing blood on her face and chest and appealed for help identifying the attacker. “Please help identify him,” she wrote, initially believing the man to be of Indian nationality. Her post spread rapidly online and was picked up by local news outlets, prompting Patong police to open an investigation.
Barbie filed a formal complaint with police and submitted a medical certificate documenting her injuries. Witnesses at the scene confirmed the assault, though none intervened during the attack, authorities said.
Arrest at Suvarnabhumi Airport
Using leads generated by public attention and the media coverage, investigators identified a suspect. Police detained the man as he attempted to pass through Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok to leave Thailand. Officials later determined the suspect was a Pakistani national, not Indian as originally believed, and returned him to Phuket to face prosecution.
Authorities credited the rapid spread of the victim’s social media appeal and local reporting with helping to locate the suspect before he left the country.
Charges and penalties
The suspect faces charges including bodily harm under Section 295 of the Thai Criminal Code, an offence that carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison or a fine of up to 40,000 baht. He is also charged with theft under Section 334, punishable by up to three years in jail or a fine of up to 60,000 baht. As a foreign national, he could face deportation after serving any sentence imposed.
Police response and wider concerns
Patong police noted that attacks on transgender sex workers by foreign clients had been reported in Phuket in the week before this incident. In response, authorities said they planned to increase patrols and tighten controls in Patong’s tourist districts to deter further violence.
Barbie welcomed the arrest as a step toward justice. The case underlined how social media and local reporting can accelerate investigations and prevent suspects from escaping the country, police said, while also highlighting ongoing safety concerns for vulnerable workers in the area.
