Police Bust Fraud Ring, Seize Gold Worth 2.7 Million Baht

BANGKOK, THAILAND – In a crackdown on international fraud, the Metropolitan Police in Bangkok have arrested four members of a Chinese-led scam network and seized gold bars worth 2.7 million baht. The gang had been operating out of the Seacon Square shopping mall, one of the city’s largest retail centers.

Major Operation at Seacon Square

On October 10, police launched a coordinated raid at Seacon Square, acting on intelligence from the Royal Thai Police headquarters regarding suspicious gold purchases. The operation resulted in the arrest of three Thai nationals and one Chinese citizen: Mr. Sombat (53), Ms. Chanyyanuch (44), Ms. Wannipa (45), and Mr. Xiong. Arrests were made both inside a gold shop within the mall and at a nearby coffee shop.

Sophisticated Scheme: Turning Fraud Proceeds into Gold

According to police, the group operated a highly professional network that recruited money couriers, converted illicit funds into gold, and smuggled the assets across unofficial border crossings into Cambodia. During interrogations at Prawet Police Station, Wannipa and Chanyyanuch admitted to recruiting Thai citizens to open bank accounts for the operation. Sombat confessed to being recruited by a friend and receiving 3,000 baht per gold purchase transaction.

95 Fraud Cases, 10 Million Baht in Damages

A review of the Royal Thai Police’s online reporting system revealed shocking figures: the network is linked to 95 fraud cases, with total damages exceeding 10 million baht. In Bangkok alone, 19 cases have been identified, resulting in losses of over one million baht.

In addition to the gold bars, which weighed a total of 724.09 grams, police seized two vehicles—a Toyota Fortuner and a Hyundai H-1—along with other evidence.

Charges and Ongoing Investigations

All four suspects have been charged with:

  • Conspiracy to commit fraud
  • Inputting false data into computer systems
  • Money laundering

Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to identify additional victims and dismantle the entire criminal network. This case once again highlights the sophistication of international fraud syndicates—and the determination of Thai authorities to bring them to justice.
