A political drama is unfolding behind the prison walls of Bangkok’s Chatuchak District. Pintongta Shinawatra Kunakornwong, daughter of the incarcerated former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, visited her father alongside her husband, Nuttaphong Kunakornwong, and Pidok Sooksawas, husband of former Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. The hour-long meeting at the Ngam Wong Wan Road facility was emotional yet positive.
“His morale is strong,” Nuttaphong reported after the visit. However, he revealed a cause for concern: Thaksin is suffering from numbness in his fingers, a health issue the family is closely monitoring.
Jokes and Political Signals at the Prison Gates
Outside the prison, the scene took on a theatrical tone. Supporters from the Red Shirt movement gathered, chanting words of encouragement and even jokingly suggesting that Nuttaphong could be “the next Prime Minister.” While the couple laughed off the remarks, the underlying political message was unmistakable.
In fact, the Pheu Thai Party had previously floated Nuttaphong as a potential candidate for future elections. The lively scene at the prison gates underscored that Thaksin’s political influence remains undiminished, even from behind bars.
Royal Pardon Denied—What’s Next?
Meanwhile, Justice Minister Rutthaphon Naowarat delivered unwelcome news: Thaksin’s second request for a royal pardon has been rejected, failing to meet legal requirements. Pintongta declined to comment, but the decision means Thaksin will remain incarcerated for the foreseeable future.
The Supreme Court had convicted the former Prime Minister on September 9 for abuse of power and conflicts of interest during his 2001–2006 tenure. Prior to his imprisonment, Thaksin had spent several months in a VIP suite at the Police General Hospital.
Investigations Widen
The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) is now investigating the so-called “14th Floor” case—Thaksin’s extended hospital stay. Twelve officials have already been questioned, with two more now under scrutiny.
NACC Secretary-General Surapong Intharathorn confirmed that Thaksin’s legal responsibility is also under review. “The case will be handled according to due process, even if it appears unusual to the public,” he stated.
