CHIANG MAI, THAILAND – A 51-year-old British motorcyclist, identified as Craig D., died after losing control of his black big bike in the Juvenile Court underpass on the Chiang Mai–Lampang Road shortly after 00:20 on 9 October 2025. He was thrown from his motorcycle and subsequently struck by three following cars before they could stop; emergency crews found motorcycle parts and debris spread across the carriageway and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Fatal crash in the underpass
According to police reports, the rider was travelling toward the underpass exit when he lost control in the ascending section of the passage. The bike skidded, ejecting the rider into the path of oncoming vehicles. Three cars ran over the fallen motorcyclist before they were able to come to a halt. Responders described a chaotic scene with parts of the motorcycle and skid marks scattered across both lanes.

Multiple rescue teams secured the scene, redirected traffic and prepared the recovery of the body. Medical personnel confirmed the man had died of multiple blunt-force injuries at the site. Local police confirmed the rider’s identity from personal documents and transferred the body to a nearby hospital for a forensic autopsy. Officers are investigating the precise sequence of events and whether speed, visibility or road surface conditions contributed to the crash.
Warning for night-time riders
A police spokesperson used the incident to urge greater caution for motorcyclists, especially at night and on inclines. Authorities warned that water, dust or loose surface material can quickly cause a rider to lose control, and they reiterated calls for lower speeds and defensive riding on the Chiang Mai–Lampang Road, which is known for demanding stretches and underpasses.

Local witnesses described the scene as distressing; neighbours and commuters expressed shock at the sudden loss of life. The British Embassy has been notified and will assist with consular formalities while the victim’s family in the United Kingdom has been informed.
