Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s unexpected offer to mediate in the ongoing border dispute with Cambodia. However, Anutin has made it clear that any talks will only proceed if Cambodia withdraws its troops and respects Thailand’s sovereignty.
Trump Eyes Historic Peace Deal
According to reports from Politico, Trump is seeking to use the upcoming ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur (October 26–28) as a platform to broker a peace agreement between the two feuding neighbors. Allegedly, Trump’s participation in the summit hinges on his ability to preside over the signing ceremony.
Although the White House has denied any such precondition, it has confirmed Trump’s interest in playing a mediating role. In a further twist, media sources claim Trump requested that Chinese officials be excluded from the summit to highlight his own involvement—an assertion also officially denied.
Thailand’s Four-Point Peace Plan
Anutin expressed openness to negotiations, but only under strict conditions:
- Withdrawal of military forces from disputed territories
- Removal of intruders from Thai sovereign land
- Clearance of hazardous materials along the border
- Full respect for Thailand’s sovereignty
“If Trump can persuade Cambodia to meet these conditions, it would safeguard Thailand’s interests,” the Prime Minister stated. He also emphasized that, as neighboring countries, Thailand and Cambodia should ideally resolve their issues without external intervention.
Nobel Prize Motives?
Speculation is mounting over Trump’s motivations. Media reports suggest Cambodia has nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize in a bid to strengthen political ties. Trump himself has repeatedly highlighted his role in resolving international conflicts—an apparent nod to Nobel criteria.
Anutin, however, remains focused: “My priority is Thailand’s advantage.” He added that he is indifferent to Trump’s Nobel aspirations, as long as Thailand emerges stronger from any negotiations.
Malaysia’s Pivotal Role
Ultimately, the outcome of the summit lies with Malaysia, the current ASEAN chair, according to Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. All diplomatic threads now converge in Kuala Lumpur, where the region awaits the next move.
