SIM Box Devices Used to Mask Scam Calls
Officers from the Investigation Division of the Metropolitan Police Bureau (IDMB) launch coordinated raids after a victim loses 398,900 baht in a fake land tax scam. The gang tricks the victim into installing a fraudulent app, then uses SIM box devices to disguise international calls as local ones.
Investigators reveal the scammers rent three properties to install the SIM box equipment, making it easier for overseas members to contact victims in Thailand. This intelligence leads police to two key locations yesterday.
Equipment Seized in Bangkok and Samut Prakan
At a townhouse in Bangkok’s Ram Inthra area, police discover a 16-slot SIM box, internet router, CCTV camera, UPS, and LAN cables. Records show over 9,000 scam calls originate from this address.
The operation continues at a Bang Phli condominium in Samut Prakan, where officers confiscate similar devices. The condo is reportedly rented by a Taiwanese national, while the townhouse lease is under a 20-year-old Thai woman named Arisara.
Thai Woman Arrested, Claims Ignorance
Police arrest Arisara at her Nakhon Sawan dormitory. She claims a Taiwanese man paid her 3,500 baht to rent the house for 6,000 baht per month, insisting she did not know about the illegal activity.
Authorities are now working to identify other suspects involved in the SIM box scam. The investigation continues as police urge the public to remain vigilant against phone scams.
