SAT steps in to support Amnat Ruenroeng after Chon Buri incident
The Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) moves to help former IBF world boxing champion Amnat Ruenroeng, considering him for a youth coaching role in Chon Buri after a recent altercation brought him into the spotlight.
Amnat Ruenroeng’s future in Thai boxing
Yesterday, SAT Chon Buri Director Peeraawat Mongkolsilp visited Amnat at his relative’s home in Sri Racha district. The meeting focused on Amnat’s well-being and explored opportunities for him to mentor young athletes.
Peeraawat says, “We recognise Amnat’s contributions to Thai sports and are ready to offer him a position as a boxing trainer or guest lecturer.” Amnat already holds a coaching licence, making him a strong candidate to help develop Thailand’s next generation of boxers.
The incident that sparked concern
A few days earlier, Amnat was involved in a physical altercation inside a convenience store in Chon Buri. A video posted online showed the 43-year-old former champion arguing with a young man before a fistfight broke out.
Witnesses claim Amnat, allegedly under the influence, pushed the younger man, who then punched Amnat in self-defence. The scuffle ended quickly, with Amnat falling to the ground and the other man helping him up. The younger man later apologised online, saying he meant no harm.
SAT’s support and Amnat’s response
During the SAT’s visit, Amnat appeared calm and cooperative, even helping with chores and serving customers at his family’s eatery. He expressed deep remorse for his actions and shared his intention to quit drinking.
“I want to use my boxing experience to give back to the community,” Amnat says.
Peeraawat confirms that the SAT Governor has instructed the local office to support Amnat’s rehabilitation and ensure he has access to new opportunities.
