Thailand’s tourism boom: Chinese visitors return in droves
Thailand’s tourism industry is experiencing a dramatic surge, with almost 100,000 foreign tourists arriving daily and Chinese visitor numbers doubling during the Golden Week holiday.
Golden Week sparks record tourism surge
The recent Golden Week, running from 28 September to 6 October, delivers a powerful boost to Thailand’s tourism sector. According to Nattariya Thaweewong, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, daily Chinese arrivals have jumped from under 10,000 to around 20,000.
This sharp increase signals renewed confidence in Thailand’s tourism sector. Improved safety measures and positive global events reassure international travellers, overcoming concerns about border tensions and flooding.
Airlines at capacity as demand skyrockets
The demand for flights into Thailand has soared, with Adith Chairattananon, secretary-general of the Association of Thai Travel Agents, reporting 99% occupancy on flights from major and provincial Chinese cities.
Return flight prices from Bangkok to Beijing have climbed sharply, and airlines such as China Eastern, Hainan Airlines, Air China, and Vietjet are fully booked on peak travel days. “Thailand is back on top,” industry insiders say.
Major events drive visitor interest
High-profile events are fuelling the tourism boom. The Women’s Volleyball World Championship drew large crowds, and the upcoming 33rd SEA Games, Loy Krathong Festival, and New Year celebrations are expected to sustain momentum.
Thailand’s stable political climate, regional cooperation on cybercrime, and positive Chinese media coverage are enhancing the country’s image. Not just Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai, but also lesser-known cities are seeing a surge in visitors.
Government boosts domestic travel
To ensure locals benefit, the government is offering tax incentives to promote domestic tourism. Thais are encouraged to explore their own country, creating a win-win for the economy.
The focus remains on cementing Thailand’s reputation as a safe, welcoming destination. Officials believe this is key to sustaining growth and supporting broader economic stability into the new year.
Thailand eyes further growth
With nearly 100,000 foreign arrivals daily, Thailand’s tourism sector is sending a clear message: the country is back and ready to reclaim its place among the world’s top travel destinations. Strategic marketing and ongoing events aim to keep the momentum strong.
