A Mother’s Cry for Help Ends in Tragedy
A young man is dead in police custody—just one day after his own mother desperately called for help. The tight-knit community of Bowin watched in disbelief as 26-year-old Thorntep Kaewsee, gripped by meth addiction, lost his battle in a lonely cell.
Mrs. Sanong Kaewka, 61, says she made the hardest choice of her life when she rang police after Thorntep’s violent, paranoid behaviour terrified her. ‘I feared for my safety,’ she revealed.
Tension Mounts Over a Phone Repair
On the day of Thorntep’s arrest, things spiraled fast. He demanded 5,000 Baht from his mother—supposedly for a mobile repair. She could only give him 3,000.
Desperate, Mrs. Sanong, a lottery vendor, lured him from his room on a ruse. That gave police time to step in and detain him.
Arrest, Search, and Solitary Confinement
Officers found Thorntep mid-drug binge in his bedroom. They seized seven methamphetamine tablets, plus drug paraphernalia. He refused to talk—only nodding to confirm his addiction.
Because he seemed unpredictable, police placed him in solitary for his safety—and the protection of others, including migrant detainees next door. It proved a fatal decision.
A Grim Discovery in the Cell
At 4:20 pm the next day, officers doing routine rounds faced a nightmare. Thorntep was dead, hanging by his T-shirt from the cell bars.
Police urgently called their chief, forensic experts, prosecutors, and medics. An inspection found no outside involvement. CCTV showed Thorntep acted alone, and his family raised no suspicion.
Three Months of Family Agony
Mrs. Sanong painted a picture of torment: her son’s addiction exploded in the past three months. Daily requests for cash rose from 300 to as much as 5,000 Baht, fuelling his habit.
