In a sensational crackdown, Thai police, in coordination with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), unraveled an underground network dealing in unapproved silicone implants. The raid led to the seizure of goods worth a staggering 8 million Baht.
Operation Led to Landmark Seizure
On September 22nd, a strategic strike was executed under the leadership of Police Lieutenant Colonel Weerapong Klaithong. Officers from the Consumer Protection Police Bureau (CPPB) teamed up with the FDA to storm a Bangkok warehouse. This action, sanctioned by a warrant from the Southern Bangkok Criminal Court, resulted in the arrest of 34-year-old Eksit, who confessed to orchestrating the illegal operations.
The search revealed alarming quantities of illegal products: 13,021 nasal implants, 1,404 chin implants, and 1,192 units of other pharmaceuticals, all lacking proper approvals. These illicit items posed significant dangers to unsuspecting consumers.
Unraveling a Three-Year Criminal Network
Investigations initiated weeks ago revealed shocking details of this clandestine trade in substandard cosmetic implants. This network had supplied over 20 beauty clinics across Bangkok for more than three years, exploiting both established facilities and private clients through online channels.
Eksit admitted his role in setting up and managing the distribution network. He now faces serious charges, including the sale of unlicensed medical products, illegal drug trade, and smuggling unregistered medicines.
Dire Health Risks: A Stark Warning
Colonel Pattanasakdi issued a grim warning about the perilous use of these products: “Silicone implants must meet ‘Medical Grade’ standards, being sterile and safe for human use.”
The seized low-cost items pose dire health risks including:
- Infections and inflammations
- Deformations from misplaced implants
- Life-threatening complications, potentially fatal
“The use of cosmetic silicone implants demands FDA approval and strict quality controls,” emphasized the official. Using illegal products is a game of Russian roulette with one’s health.
Tracing the Illicit Implant Trail
CPPB investigators are now tracing the origins of these illegal implants, suspecting international supply chains, potentially from neighboring countries. Meanwhile, the clinics supplied by these dangerous products are under scrutiny, with some possibly being unaware recipients, while others knowingly participated.
Authorities have vowed to continue their aggressive campaign against illegal medical products. “We will intensify such operations to safeguard public health,” a spokesperson assured.
