Jealousy Sparks Fatal Stabbing in Phichit
A shocking murder has rocked Phichit province: 61-year-old contractor Sombat allegedly stabbed his 31-year-old girlfriend, Pochana, multiple times in a Ford pickup. The bloody incident occurred around 10:30 pm on 20 September along Route 117, leaving the young woman dead at the scene.
Sombat, whose wife passed away a year ago, had been dating Pochana for four to five months. On the night of the attack, he left work early, borrowed his employer’s pickup, and picked her up in Sukhothai. The relationship spiraled into a deadly confrontation as jealousy over their significant age difference reportedly erupted during the drive through Phichit.
Murder Confession and Suicide Attempt
After attacking Pochana, Sombat reportedly called his employer to confess the murder and seek advice. Instead of turning himself in, he attempted to take his own life with the same knife. Rescue teams found him unconscious beside his victim and rushed him to Wachirabarami Hospital, later transferring him to the intensive care unit at Phichit Hospital. He remains hospitalized and is currently unable to speak.
Police have confirmed that jealousy was the primary motive. Authorities are treating the case with utmost seriousness, highlighting how emotional instability and age-gap insecurities can escalate into violent outcomes.
A Dangerous Pattern: Age Gaps and Jealousy
Provincial Police Chief Thadet Klomkliang noted: “Jealousy was the motive.” This case echoes a similar tragedy in Chon Buri earlier in September, when a 75-year-old man shot his 41-year-old wife and himself over jealousy tied to their age difference.
Experts warn that significant age gaps in romantic relationships can trigger insecurities and jealousy, especially if one partner is much younger. Without trust and communication, the situation can escalate into catastrophic violence.
Legal Consequences Await
Once Sombat recovers from his injuries, he will face trial. Authorities indicate he could face a life sentence if he survives. His suicide attempt underscores the severity of his actions and the awareness of their consequences. Meanwhile, Pochana’s family and the local community grapple with the shock of a senseless, preventable tragedy.
