Chiang Rai Airport doubles capacity

Northern Thailand takes flight

The expansion officially kicked off at a ceremony at Le Méridien Chiang Rai Resort. Governor Charin Thongsuk opened the first public seminar, attended by over 100 officials, business leaders, and local stakeholders.
“Chiang Rai’s unique position as the northernmost province, with its landscapes and cultural treasures, makes it the ideal location,” said the governor. The upgrade is expected to boost tourism, stimulate the local economy, and improve residents’ quality of life.

A three-phase masterplan

Airport chief Wing Commander Somchanok Tiamthiebrat highlighted the project’s strategic importance: “AOT is expanding key airports to position Thailand as a leading aviation hub in Southeast Asia.” Current capacity of 3 million passengers per year is no longer sufficient. The first phase focuses on three main areas: nine new aircraft parking bays, a new terminal and modernization of the existing terminal, and infrastructure upgrades for utilities and traffic systems.
The COVID-19 pandemic briefly slowed air travel, but now Thailand faces a tourism surge. The expansion comes just in time to accommodate the expected influx of passengers and aligns with government policies to enhance competitiveness in aviation, tourism, trade, and investment.

Public input and passenger benefits

The seminar also allowed public feedback to influence design and planning. “This participatory approach maximizes public benefit,” an AOT spokesperson said. CRA consultant group was hired to conduct surveys and assist with planning, emphasizing sustainable and long-term development.
Travelers can expect clear advantages: more direct international flights, modernized terminals with improved services, shorter queues, and more efficient processing. Better access to northern Thailand’s tourist highlights positions Chiang Rai as a strong alternative to the crowded Chiang Mai airport and a prime gateway to the Golden Triangle, cultural landmarks, and the region’s natural wonders.
