Live-tracking becomes a national obsession
On 4 September, Thaksin Shinawatra left Thailand just days before a court ruling over his controversial hospital stay. His initial destination was reportedly Singapore for a medical check-up. But then the unexpected happened: his Bombardier Global 7500 jet veered northwest toward Dubai.
Thousands of Thai users flocked to Flightradar24 to monitor every movement. The flight became the most-watched globally on that day. Tension peaked on 8 September, when over 33,000 users simultaneously tracked the jet’s landing back in Bangkok.
The tech behind the frenzy
Founded in Sweden in 2006, Flightradar24 relies on over 50,000 ADS-B receivers worldwide, enhanced by multilateral radar, satellite ADS-B, and airline and airport feeds.
Not all flights are visible — government, military, and some private jets remain hidden. Thaksin’s jet, however, was fully trackable, turning the journey into an impromptu political barometer.
Why Thailand went into overdrive
Thaksin’s trip occurred during a politically sensitive period: a new rival had just assumed the premiership, and the court was to rule on his hospital stay. The sudden Dubai detour fueled speculation: was he evading the court? Would he return?
The former PM later explained that “immigration delays in Bangkok forced the reroute,” despite intending to see a doctor in Singapore. Yet the explanation barely calmed the public, as live tracking had already become a political phenomenon.
From niche tool to political radar
Dr. Kornprom Saengaram, heart surgeon and former Thai Airways pilot, notes, “Thais have used Flightradar24 for years, mainly for flight schedules. But this political focus is new.”
The platform has already seen record numbers in the past: 5 million users tracked Queen Elizabeth II’s final flight in 2022, and 2.2 million followed US Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s Taiwan visit. In Thailand, live flight tracking has now taken on a new, political dimension.
Flightradar24 continues to expand through community participation, with volunteers hosting receivers worldwide. Once purely an aviation tool, it has evolved into a societal political radar.
