Thailand’s Democrat Party is on the verge of a historic decision: former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has been given the green light to run for party leadership once again. The move comes after the sudden resignation of Chalermchai Sri-on, opening the door for the old star despite what were supposed to be strict eligibility rules.
Chalermchai steps down – Abhisit returns?
The party has been shaken to its core. Chalermchai Sri-on resigned unexpectedly, citing health reasons, but insiders say tensions had been simmering for years. The oldest political party in Thailand has struggled with declining poll numbers and internal divisions, leaving a leadership vacuum that few are ready to fill.
Now, a breakthrough: Party spokesman Ramate Rattanachaweng confirmed that Abhisit, widely revered as “the Royal,” may contest the leadership. Normally, candidates must be party members for two years. However, exceptions exist for veterans: anyone who has previously held board positions, been an MP, or served as a minister can immediately stand for election.
The return of the gentleman politician
Abhisit Vejjajiva led Thailand from 2008 to 2011, navigating the Democrat Party through turbulent times. Known for his aristocratic poise and Oxford education, he won the hearts of urban elites but struggled to gain traction in rural areas.
In 2023, he withdrew from all positions, frustrated by constant factional disputes. Now, the party’s desperate situation has prompted calls for his return. Even Democrat elder Chuan Leekpai has backed the push to bring him back.
Why the timing is crucial
The party faces a ticking clock: a new executive must be elected within 60 days. Thailand is heading toward general elections, and the Democrats risk slipping into irrelevance if they delay. The party urgently needs:
