Mass Crash on Sukhumvit Road: Lorry Ploughs Into Songthaew, 12 Injured
A devastating traffic accident on Sukhumvit Road in Samut Prakan left 12 people injured on the morning of September 11, two of them critically. An 18-wheeler slammed into a Songthaew, triggering a chain reaction that damaged several vehicles. Police are now investigating reckless driving.
Songthaew wrecked in brutal collision
The crash happened near the Bang Pu Highway Police Service Station, heading towards Pak Nam. A massive Hino truck from Rayong slammed into the back of a white Toyota Vigo Songthaew operating on route 36 (Pak Nam–Khlong Dan).
The impact was violent: the Songthaew’s rear step was torn away, its tail lights shattered and the entire back section was crushed. A red Yamaha Spark motorcycle was dragged under the truck’s right rear wheels, while a red Toyota Corolla nearby was also struck and badly damaged. The scene resembled a war zone.
Emergency response: 12 injured, two critical
Rescue teams from Sikarin Samut Prakan Hospital, the Ruamkatanyu Foundation and the Samut Prakan Rescue Association rushed to the site. Nine people with minor injuries were taken to Sikarin Samut Prakan Hospital, while three were transferred to Samut Prakan Hospital. Two victims remain in critical condition and require intensive care.
Eyewitnesses, including a motorcyclist riding nearby, claimed the truck driver never braked before slamming into the vehicles. Passengers on the Songthaew also said the lorry swerved left without slowing down or signalling.
The drivers gave conflicting accounts. The truck driver insisted he was simply en route from Rayong to the Bang Pu Industrial Estate. The Songthaew driver countered: “Traffic was crawling. Suddenly, there was a huge crash from behind.”
Police probe reckless driving
Bang Pu police secured the scene, photographed the wreckage and brought both drivers in for questioning. Investigators noted the absence of skid marks, raising suspicions of negligence. The truck driver is now facing charges of reckless driving and causing injury.
If either of the two critically injured passengers dies, the charges could be upgraded to causing death by negligence.
The Sukhumvit Road corridor in Samut Prakan is notorious for congestion and frequent accidents. Heavy trucks, Songthaews and motorbikes all jostle for space — often with barely a metre to spare.
