Bangkok’s 4.5 Billion Baht Landmark: Grand Center Point Prestige to Open This December
From the ashes of the legendary Peninsula Plaza comes Bangkok’s newest jewel: the Grand Center Point Prestige Bangkok, a 45-storey tower with 509 lavish rooms, opening its doors this December. The developer is sending a clear signal — Thailand’s tourism industry is booming like never before.
From shopping haven to luxury landmark
The once-iconic Peninsula Plaza on Ratchadamri Road stood for more than three decades before closing permanently in 2022. Now, developer LH Mall & Hotel Co Ltd is pouring 4.5 billion Baht (around €115 million) into transforming the three-rai site in Pathum Wan into a luxury hotel designed to dazzle.
The original plan set the grand opening for 2026. But thanks to a surging tourism market, the launch was fast-tracked to December 1, 2025. Bookings in sister hotels already hit 60–70% for December, proving demand is running red hot.
Luxury comes at a price
The Grand Center Point Prestige firmly plants itself in the high-end segment, with room rates starting at 8,000–10,000 Baht per night. Combined with the neighbouring Grand Center Point Ratchadamri, the complex will boast over 1,000 rooms — perfectly timed to capitalise on Bangkok’s tourism frenzy.
“The third quarter has outperformed the second,” said Kitti Worabanphot, CEO of LH Mall & Hotel Co Ltd. He points to wealthier, independent Chinese travellers as a key growth driver.
Hotels booming despite China slump
Despite a 35% drop in Chinese tourists — traditionally Thailand’s largest visitor group — Bangkok hotels are still recording 80–90% occupancy. Luxury hotels, in particular, are thriving thanks to long-haul travellers from Europe, the Middle East and across Asia.
“Luxury remains resilient,” said Carlos Martinez of Knight Frank. “It’s driven by affluent tourists and long-haul demand. Bangkok still offers better value than Singapore or Tokyo — a huge draw for experience-seekers.”
Competition intensifies: 5,100 new rooms ahead
The market is heating up. Nineteen new hotels are set to open in 2025 alone, adding 5,100 rooms — the fastest growth since the pandemic. Besides the Grand Center Point Prestige, new arrivals include Four Points by Sheraton, Aman Nai Lert, Queensland Hotel and The Quarter.
“The question is whether the market can absorb all these rooms,” Martinez warned. While luxury properties are well positioned, mid-tier hotels reliant on Chinese group tours face stiff competition.
The debut of the Grand Center Point Prestige marks more than just another hotel opening — it signals Bangkok’s bold march towards becoming Asia’s next luxury capital. But the real test is still to come.
