Bangkok Spotless – Frankfurt Dirty? Airport Clash

First Impressions: Bangkok vs. Frankfurt Airports

Germany and Thailand—two countries as different as can be. Roughly 9,000 kilometers, several time zones, and entirely different languages separate them. Differences also appear when it comes to airport cleanliness, as a recent social media post illustrates. A German traveler described on Facebook how orderly and clean the departure from Bangkok was, contrasting sharply with his arrival in Frankfurt.

His first impression after landing in Germany: “Everything is dirty.” He publicly expressed surprise at the condition of Germany’s largest airport. In Bangkok, staff were immediately on hand to clean and assist. In Frankfurt, the sight of scattered trash and untidy areas clearly shocked him. Many other users confirmed similar experiences, particularly around baggage claim.

Culture Shock at the Terminal: German Traveler Surprised by Mess in Frankfurt

What stood out to this traveler seems familiar to others as well: “I noticed the same thing in January. Such filth,” wrote a Facebook user under the post. She criticized, among other things, that the ceilings in the baggage claim area often remain open and argued that the airport operator should have sufficient resources to address this. Apparently, many passengers agree that German airports lack cleanliness and maintenance.

Rankings and Passenger Perceptions

Interestingly, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi regularly scores higher than major German airports in cleanliness rankings. International studies—such as the 2023 report by the British aviation institute Skytrax—support the positive impression many passengers have. Conversely, German airport visitors increasingly criticize trash, untidy corners, and insufficient upkeep. Frankfurt Airport operator Fraport AG emphasizes that cleaning is conducted regularly—but international travelers’ expectations appear to have risen.
